Jagriti School for the underprivileged
Jagriti is an innovative project undertaken by D.A.V Public School, Sector 8, Panchkula to educate and empower under-privileged children. The idea is to utilize the school infrastructure, along with its teaching staff to take classes for disadvantaged children from nearby areas after regular school hours. The vision took a form in year 2000 with 25 students and Class I. Every year one class of 25 students is progressively added. Currently, Jagriti proudly accomodates 250 students and provides education upto Class VI.
The school functions from 12:00 noon to 4:00 pm , to facilitate working mothers (who work as domestic help) to come back home and help send their children to school as these children look after their siblings while their mothers are away at work.
Selection of students is done on the following criterion
- The Parents should have a ration card / voters' ID of Panchkula
- Sponsored children of permanent residents of Panchkula are given preference
- Interview of the children by the principal
- Interview with the parents to gauge their interest in their child’s education
Some of the school’s facilities are
- An environment conducive to learning
- A colorful atmosphere in the classrooms, playground and activity room of the kindergarten section
- Regular use of multimedia to show educational movies
- Knowledge of computers is imparted in computer lab
- A special section of the library that includes books of interest
- Mid-day refreshments are provided daily
- Uniforms, books, stationary are provided free of cost
A snapshot of the school’s activities
- The day starts with the assembly where the students recite 'Gayatri Mantra' , the school prayer and National Anthem
- Celebration of National days helps the students develop patriotism towards their country
- Sports is an integral part of curriculum, to foster a feeling of teamwork, sportsmanship and inculcate discipline
- Annual days help identify latent potential in the children and encourage creativity on their part
The progress has been remarkable so far:
- Students have been exceptionally enthusiastic about learning
- They have come to value a happy, healthy and hygienic way of life
- Academically, the performance of Jagriti students is at par with that of the students of Public schools.
- In 2009, nine students will be appearing through Haryana School Education Board for Class VIII examination
- These students have a vision of seeing themselves as doctors, engineers, & IT literates.
Prayaas involvement Prayaas is looking to sponsor an entire class of students for the forthcoming year.
